At the very most basic level, twurl is a URL shortener that allows you to track clicks.

Why is that important?
Back in the day, people used to build Web sites. And then, they would spend a lot of money and energy getting people to those Web sites. And then, they would dig through their Web logs to figure out what those people were doing on the site and from whence they came.

And that all made sense.
And then the Web changed.

And suddenly, getting people to your site wasn't half as important as participating in the community that is the Web.

And yet, in the current participatory Web environment, we still spend an awful lot of time creating content and promoting links. But, today, a good chunk of those links have nothing to do with anything we can monitor.

We share interesting URLs on Twitter. Or we add a bookmark to ma.gnolia or del.icio.us. Or we digg a cool article. Or we post to Facebook. Or we add a link to our LinkedIn profile.

But, one of the drawbacks in this collaborative environment is that we have no idea if any of these links are getting clicked. Because we don't control either end of the data stream. We're just part of the middle.

So, people began thinking, "Wouldn't it be nice to know if those links — those links that we think are so cool — are even getting clicked by the folks we call our friends?"

And that was the start of twurl.
